This seminar will explore the complex place of race within the historically white practice of psychoanalysis. Peter will begin by tracing how race has come to figure as a differentiating activity in European history. This will lead onto the central question for the seminar: Given that we live in a racialised world, what is the significance of this for the work of psychoanalysis?
The second part of the seminar will engage more directly with psychoanalytic practice. Peter will discuss how different psychoanalytic accounts have understood race and how this has been addressed in therapeutic work. Drawing on clinical material, Peter will open up a critique of what we do in the consulting room when faced with race as a significant difference between therapist and patient.
Dr Peter Nevins is a psychoanalyst in private practice and director of MIND in Islington, London. He is also co-chair of training at the Site. Peter has both a research and clinical interest in the complex field of race and psychoanalysis and has taught and lectured widely on this subject.
