Title: Abi Canepa-Anson – The gap between the silence and the scream – exploring the problems of racism and colour blindness in psychotherapy training
Abi Canepa-Anson
I will be addressing the impact of the trauma of racism and the problems of colour blindness in psychotherapy training. I will explore how the colonial past stays with us and continues to play a part in the minds of black and white thinking. Part of the problem I believe is located in the wider cultural phenomenon of “whiteness” which denies racialised experience in favour of a sameness. Also problematic is the internalisation of the negative stereotype of what it is to be black. I will conclude with what may facilitate the process towards embracing cultural differences in psychoanalytic training.
Abi Canepa-Anson runs a private practice offering therapy and supervision as well as facilitating a trauma of racism group for psych professionals. She mentors BAME professionals on a Mentoring Leadership programme, a scheme created by Health Education England to address inequality in senior leadership post in the NHS. She holds a Masters in the Psychodynamics of Human Development, gained at the British Association of Psychotherapy (BAP); she was awarded a merit from Birkbeck University of London. She gained a postgraduate Diploma in Psychodynamic Theory and Practice from Roehampton University and undertook her clinical training at Westminster Pastoral Foundation (WPF). Abi also trained at Relate Institute and qualified as a Relationship Counsellor and with the Institute of Group Analysis where she qualified as a Group Supervisor.
